Received a full-tuition scholarship from my school. President's List every semester so far. Pertinent Activities or Jobs: I've been working as an undergrad TA for the past 3 years.
For my sophomore and junior years, I assisted with entry-level mechanics and electromagnetics courses both algebra-based and calculus-based, as well as honors and non-honors. This year, I'm assisting with our junior-level electromagnetics course. I've presented my research at a university-wide conference two years in a row.
During my REU, I did a poster presentation at an end-of-summer symposium, as well as an oral presentation a week prior. I've also done a poster presentation at a regional APS meeting, and am planning to do so again later this semester.
Any Miscellaneous Accomplishments that Might Help: I'm in the executive cabinet of my university's Student Government Association. I've made some pretty good connections during the summers of andso that should definitely help.
I think this'll be my last edit on my applicant profile, unless I can think of anything helpful to add later. All in all, I'd say that this was a very successful application season for me.
My general strategy was along the lines of "throw a lot of darts at the dartboard, and some are sure to stick," but things definitely went better than I had expected.
For people applying to PhD programs in the future, here are some lessons I've learned over the past few months.
The thing that I think helped me out the most was my research experience. I started doing undergraduate research my sophomore year, both at my home institution and at other institutions. If you haven't started doing research yet, I'd recommend doing so as soon as possible.
Not only does it build your physics background, but the relationships you form with your advisers will allow them to write extremely insightful and well-crafted letters of recommendation. Be prepared to potentially spend a ton of money. This is one thing that I wish I knew going into the process.
